The World of Otherkin

Otherkin are Elves and Other Mystic Creatures in Human Form

Dec 31, 2008 Linda Yu

Elves in human bodies, werewolves and vampires at your local mall: Otherkin are a rapidly growing phenomenon in the world of spirituality. Learn about their world!

The Otherkin are people who believe that some part of themselves is non-human - more specifically, that the non-human part is better described as a mythical creature. Although some Otherkin feel physically non-human, most Kin feel that they have, for example, the mind or soul of an elf in a human body. This is similar to being transgendered, except that Otherkin are trans-species. Some Kin feel human in this life, but that they had past lives as elves, angels and other beings. Since Otherkin are relatively few, they generally find resources and speak to each other via various Internet sites. Here are a few common types of otherkin.

Different Types of Otherkin

Elven - The most common type of Otherkin are elves and fae of all types. This is because elves are the closest race to humans. The definition of elf/fae includes light elves, dark elves, pixies, dwarves, halflings, and most humanoid races in mythology. Indeed, mythologies around the world support the idea that elves have been the progenitors of many human families, and that many humans raise changelings, which are elven children. The tale of the Little Mermaid is perhaps the most famous example of this. The Elenari are a specific group of elves who originate from a certain group of planets. For more information on their culture, visit the Elenari website.

Vampire - There is much controversy between the vamp and kin communities over whether vampires are a type of kin. The general consensus is that vampires who are born vampires are kin, while vamps who become vamps later on are not.

Therian - Therian is short for therianthrope, and therians have an original form that is in-between human and animal. Some therians are werewolves or some other type of 'were-animal' that transforms in various scenarios, some are not.

Otaku-Kin and Fiction-Kin - Otaku-kin are on the fringe side of the Kin community. However, when one accepts a model of multiple realities, and the reincarnation of souls from various realities to this one, it is entirely possible for one reality to be almost exactly like a world represented by a fictional story in this reality, and for souls to be reincarnated across the veil from that one.

Awakening

Otherkin usually go through a process called awakening, in which they discover who they truly are via remembering past lives, realizing their abilities and differences from other people, and find the 'kin community. It usually happens around adolescence, and awakening is a very intense period of personal discovery. Many 'kin discover painful past life memories, and the destruction of worlds in other planes could be part of the reason we are having a 'kin resurgence here on earth. Either way, just like the transgender, gay, or pagan coming out experience, it is not to be taken lightly.

There are many other types of otherkin, such as dragons, fae, angels, phoenixes, demons, starseeds (space aliens), and pretty much anything you can think of. The similar phenomena of indigo and crystal children, and walk-ins, may also be related. Many Kin are, as of now, still unawakened. If you think you may be 'kin, it would behoove you to check out some of the resources listed below. If you are not 'kin, it is still interesting to learn about this world of spiritual possibilities.
