» Jolinda - What is the relationship between religion and society?

Surely they are interconnected, but is it really a "chicken and egg" relationship? Durkheim thinks society birthed religion, and others, such as Marx, would say that religion is what represses us and makes us all good little worker bees in an alienated society.

Is it religion that allows us to all live together without killing each other (present day international relations would indicate that if so, religion is doing a miserable job on a global scale!)?

What do you think?

IMO, Durkheim and Marx are both right. Society birthed religion to repress the worker bees.
