Unfortunately, not those that think it is fun to sleep around! And of course the polygamists too.

» pink101 - Possessiveness

.
Our materialistic society has led us to a place where we are sure we have a right ot possess our relationships and the people who are part of them.
.
Marriages are based on possessiveness. "You're not the same person I married; so, I want a divorce. Now, get out of my face." That is possessiveness plain and simple.
.
Our Constitution expresses our right for association and the development of relationships. It appears that it may be a violation of a person's Constitutional rights to forbid polygamus marriages or to have marriages within the same gender. I might not agree with your speech; but, I defend you right to express yourself. What's good for the goose is good for the gander. Or should that be, what's good for the gander is good for the gander? Education seems like a good thing to me.
.
Maybe it's time we have a legal definition of what it is that constitutes the family?
.

Just to point up the way legislation is wht the apostle Paul said it was, a little leven that soon takes over the whole lump.
.
If gays are given the right to civil unions, what is there to stop wealthy men from having more than one wife by a civil union? Stupid. We need an amendement that defines the family.

In response to Civil Union posted by pink101:

We cannot and should not let the courts decide the issue of gay marriage or gay civil unions. The issue MUST be decided via the legislative process w/ clear definitions as to what constitutes a "family." Only in this way can you contain pandora's box.

In response to Agreed posted by BrianTubbs:
.
So, what is the view of the family on which you think our legislature will settle?
.
We the People need to come up with a definition and we need to do what is necessary to make it stick.
.
All of which means that we need to understand what a family's purpose is in our society.
.
We're discussing that in the open fortums of Mind and Soul in a thread titled, Family.

In response to Possessiveness posted by pink101:

Perhaps adding some room to grow. No, a marriage or partnership is not what it started out to be...how could it be? We all grow and change...even minute to minute. Why would we be the same person some years later in the relationship?

The best thing we can do is to respect the growth of each and every individual. Respect our partners, respect our families, respect the children, as well as adults. In this way, we allow that change is the order of life, not the difference.

» pink101 - The Family

In response to Possessiveness posted by spiritalk:
.
If we can define "the family" rather than defining "marriage" we might be able to see the problem a little more clearly.
.
What is a family? Is it a group of people in some office environment with whom a person works? Is it a group of people who meet with each other in some church environment? Or is it a group of people one of whom carries out the role of the one who bore you for 9 months while you were developing in her womb? Can we put the "family" in some sort of context where marriage plays an integral part? Can we see that it is the "family" that is the institution and not marriage? How long does it take for us to realize that marriage is onlly one of the relative aspects of the family along with others like children, brothers, sisters, and all the other combinations possible like husband and wife and mother and father?
.
Which begs the question of why the family is in such dysfunction today along with the other institutions of our society.
.
