Different interpretations of God.
.
The Catholic Church has more than 5,000 different beings to whom humans can directly appeal for favors and miracles. I read they even have saints that specialize in particulary types of healing. And, the late pope taught that "Our Lady of Fatima" guided the would be assassin's bullet to save his life when he was shot. Aren't all this different entities little gods each in their own right? Isn't God the supernatural being with whom we can have a personal relationship?
.
Who said the religion of this age will be the entertainment of the people in the next age?

In response to Revelation posted by BrianTubbs:
I was with you until the last bit. LOL

Historically the bible isn't even our best source for jewish history, but it is one source of historical reference. Did these people exist? Is this their story? This can have a grain of truth. In current historical reference it is found that finding this grain of sand, we have made a beach.

Divine inspiration is available even today. Why stick to old literature? when the modern message is available. Even inspired writing can eventually date itself.

I do believe that there is a reason for the existence and continuity of all religions. What that need and its purpose are, can be questioned. As science shows us more of our lives, we can move with the times and still remain consistent with spirituality. All things evolve and change. That is the true meaning of evolution.

God bless, J

They have certainly been interesting discussions. I don't feel that overwhelming sense of 'my way' that existed in the past. I do sense some respect in the questions, hence I will answer. If it gets overwhelming I would not have participated in the discussion.

Thank you for your concerns.

God bless, J

Interesting note: The religion of today has and is the entertainment of the people of the present. (That, too, is evolution!)

My question: So why follow the same old text?

Good question, J. I add mine to it: Why not write our own text?

According to Catholic mysticism, saints are intercessory beings. They're not deities themselves (though some adherents do adore them as if they were). Example: St. Peregrine, the patron saint of cancer sufferers - whose cancer was miraculously cured - petitions God on your behalf to do the same for you. Kinda goes along with Matthew 18:19, the intercessory being having been 'on earth' in the past.
.
Spiritalk - do you believe there are intercessory beings?

In response to Revelation posted by spiritalk:

Listen, I've enjoyed this exchange. I have learned more about where you are coming from. I find that, in some conservative Christian circles, it's often that some preachers rail against "straw men." I don't want to be that kind of person. I believe in going to the source and meeting people of different faiths, and talking with them - and learning more about what they actually believe (not what I THINK they believe).

If as hawknut suggests, I've sullied this forum with my "traditional" views of Christ, that was not my intention. I meant no disrespect to you or anyone else here.

In response to Spiritalk posted by BrianTubbs:
So, umm, why do you think it is that we humans insist upon speaking of god in gendered terms?

See my original post and thoughts on the matter here:

http://alternativespirituality.suite101....

In essence, I think as mainstream culture begins following science in accepting that things like gender and sexuality are not always strict either/or dualities, our concept of god will follow.

Thoughts?
