» Feature Writer Brian Tubbs - Things left out

In response to Bible Contradictions posted by spiritalk:

You're stepping into an area of history that I love - ancient history, the growth of the Christian church, etc. But this is where I am sensitive to what forum I'm in, so out of respect for the folks here, I don't want to get too deep into the development of the Bible. But, I would love to discuss this with you in a different forum of your choice. Maybe Protestantism? Maybe the Mind & Soul front page? Maybe Philosophy?

For now...I'll just say that the idea of a conspiracy in the canonization process has been overplayed by folks like Elaine Pagels and Dan Brown. It appeals to people. It sells well, but the evidence just doesn't add up. And, in fact, there are plenty of liberal, non-Christian textual historians who have distanced themselves from the likes of Pagels, Brown, et al.

Things grow in wisdom's light.
.
We gain wisdom through time and experience.

What was in the past was and it is constantly on the move.
.
You're right to push for the continual upward climb.
.
Scholars are constantly scouring the U.S.Constitution looking for understandings that will help justice grow in our society.
.
Unhappily, others are constantly trying to find loopholes that will allow them to strategize for retrograde purposes to limit and to produce different renditions of justice. That's what our current federal executive branch appears to be doing.
.
People like you are needed if true justice is to prevail. That doesn't mean everything you say and do is fit and proper; but, it doesn't mean that what you say and so is not fit and proper. Just keep plugging away.

» Feature Writer Brian Tubbs - Pagels

In response to Things left out posted by Jolinda:

Her work is not well-respected in all circles. In fact, she goes much further than many liberal biblical critics, including Bart Ehrman (who is agnostic and who wrote Misquoting Jesus). Pagels is also a feminist (I think that's fair to say), which makes it ironic that she believes a great wrong was done for the Gospel of Thomas to be excluded from the biblical canon. The Gospel of Thomas is pretty sexist.

There are highlighted times in our history of progress that have shown woman the light of progress...1848 with the suffragettes and temperance leagues, 1960s with the flower children, and the constant, ongoing struggle for woman in the workplace indicates we haven't come far enough baby!

Any struggle for equality liberates men as well. That is the interesting fact that makes one wonder...why fight so hard to keep this staus quo?

God bless, J

In response to Pagels posted by spiritalk:

Technicality -- Paul didn't write a gospel. He wrote epistles.

But I concede we're off topic here, so I'll let your categorization of Paul stand (even though I differ with it).

» pink101 - Women's Liberation

In response to Civil Rights posted by spiritalk:
.
I remember standing in the bedroom of my home in the late 1960s and seeing two young women crossing the street, barefoot and wearing simple dresses, holding a bouquet of flowers in one hand. They walked down the sidewalk. Someone said, "Flower girls".
.
During those days I spent quite a bit of time in Ann Arbor. I saw women take their bras off and toss them into 55 gallon drums aflame. Symbolic, of course; but, it made strong points. I was already in my mid thirties and was, just then, entering college for the first time. I had a wife and four children. I got caught up in the times. It is hard for people, today, to understand the dynamics of the sixties when our president had been gunned down in Dallas and Martin Luther King II, the major civil rights leader, had been gunned down and when our friends and acquaintances were joining in peace marches all while the Viet Nam War raged and young men were dying by the thousands.
.
It was a difficult time. And, it is even more difficult for us to put it in context of the days in which we are now living.
.
I'm certainly not interested in keeping things as they are now. I'm for change. But, how can we change if we are divided as to what it is that we want to move into. We cannot get into the future from here. WE have to create dialogue in which we begin to talk about what kind of a future we want. We have to decide on that future. That is our first order of business as far as I can tell.
.
Is that a possibility over there where you see yourself as being?
.
By the way, what the apostle Paul wrote, he called his gospel and it is universally refered to as the Pauline Gospel.
.

Correct. He qualified his writings as 'the' and 'his' gospel.
