- Things left out
You're stepping into an area of history that I love - ancient history, the growth of the Christian church, etc. But this is where I am sensitive to what forum I'm in, so out of respect for the folks here, I don't want to get too deep into the development of the Bible. But, I would love to discuss this with you in a different forum of your choice. Maybe Protestantism? Maybe the Mind & Soul front page? Maybe Philosophy?
For now...I'll just say that the idea of a conspiracy in the canonization process has been overplayed by folks like Elaine Pagels and Dan Brown. It appeals to people. It sells well, but the evidence just doesn't add up. And, in fact, there are plenty of liberal, non-Christian textual historians who have distanced themselves from the likes of Pagels, Brown, et al.

I'll give you Dan Brown, but Elaine Pagels is a PhD whose work is very well respected.

- Pagels
Her work is not well-respected in all circles. In fact, she goes much further than many liberal biblical critics, including Bart Ehrman (who is agnostic and who wrote Misquoting Jesus). Pagels is also a feminist (I think that's fair to say), which makes it ironic that she believes a great wrong was done for the Gospel of Thomas to be excluded from the biblical canon. The Gospel of Thomas is pretty sexist.

There are highlighted times in our history of progress that have shown woman the light of progress...1848 with the suffragettes and temperance leagues, 1960s with the flower children, and the constant, ongoing struggle for woman in the workplace indicates we haven't come far enough baby!
Any struggle for equality liberates men as well. That is the interesting fact that makes one wonder...why fight so hard to keep this staus quo?
God bless, J

- Paul
Technicality -- Paul didn't write a gospel. He wrote epistles.
But I concede we're off topic here, so I'll let your categorization of Paul stand (even though I differ with it).

Take a peek at an early feminist's comments on the Bible, chapter by chapter. Pretty interesting stuff.

he called his gospel and it is universally refered to as the Pauline Gospel.
.
Correct. He qualified his writings as 'the' and 'his' gospel.
