.
It's like judging George Washington solely on the count that he owned slaves, and ignoring all the tremendous things he did for the United States (including most especially refusing to become a king or dictator).
.
Similarly, it's like judging Martin Luther based on his hatefilled anti-semitic writings in his little book "On the Jews and their lies." Look at the impact he had on western society, especially German society. Hitler read Luther's dirty little book and implemented many of Luther's ideas.

.
must Christians who believe in the divine inspiration of the Bible jettison those beliefs in order to be accepted by those who embrace "progressive" positions on these issues?
.
I would ask ~why~ Christian Fundamentalists would be looking for acceptance - when they clearly don't share the progressive's views on these issues.
.
It seems that a Bible-believing Christian ... is seen as an obstacle to those who advocate for feminism, gay rights, etc.
.
IMO, you are correct. Christian Fundamentalists vehemently and openly oppose feminism and gay rights. Therefore, ~I~ see them as obstacles to civil rights.

» Feature Writer Brian Tubbs - Okay, so....

In response to Obstacles posted by Migisi:

I reiterate a point I made in another thread. All "sides" (traditional, alternative, conservative, liberal, Christian, non-Christian, whatever 'side' you want to pick) seek to "go around, over, or through" the "other side." Everyone, to some degree, is seeking to have their agenda or point of view prevail in society. Everyone.

My thinking is that 'obstacles' to civil rights is germaine to the topic.
.
Are there other obstacles which have suspended forward motion on civil rights? We can talk about them too.

In response to Impasse posted by Migisi:
Just jumping in with one question: Does Paul support or not support slavery on the human level, in your view? I know he says that in Christ, there is neither bond nor free, but he also tells slaves to obey their masters, The Southern slave owners (and some Northerners) stood on these passages to hold onto slavery, citing that the bond/free passage referred to Heaven and the obey passage referred to the here and now. If that's the case, then Christianity's support of slavery for more than 1800 years was Biblically justified. And, for all intents and purposes, could still be. What do you say? Thanks.
