The history of this particular celebration tends to get lost (like all such events) in the current practices. One aspect floats through the history of Halloween...it is a time of the thinning of the veil between the material life and the spirit life.
We held a seance on Halloween and enjoyed the fellowship of spirit.

From a Spiritualist point of view, Pink, not quite!
There is a group dynamic for sure. That is to be compatible in effort and sincere approach. While our group had many from diverse interests (Paranormal, Pagan, Spiritualist, etc.) we had a wonderful combined energy of sincere investigation.
The word seance means to actually open and experiment with spirit from the realms of spirit (where we all go on death). And Halloween is considered the time of thinning of veil between the material world and the spirit world.
Each of us is body, mind, spirit. In mediumship we understand our ability to get in touch with our own spirit as the instrument for attuning with the spirit world. So the seance is a time to relax and get in touch with spirit in all of us as well as those that work with us (guides) from spirit realms.
While being spirit now and always I appreciate the differing energies of body (material vibration) mind (consciousness) and spirit (a lighter vibration within). I do not see any given activity (we discussed this in relationship to marriage*) as having a spirit all its own. That, to me, does not make us each personally responsible for the relationship.
*My ex went into councelling (assuming I needed help - not him) putting the marriage in a realm of spirit (or something) beyond our own abilities to interact in the relationship. It didn't work then, nor will it work now.

Would this be an actual physical thinning associated with a specific season (like the spring equinox or winter solstice)? Could you explain how Halloween - in particular - plays a part in this 'thinning'?

So the seance is a time to relax and get in touch with spirit in all of us as well as those that work with us (guides) from spirit realms.

You and others of differing interests got together to get in touch with a common spirit within all of you?? Or the individual spirit within each individual?

How do the guides help you get in touch - and with whom or what realm?

As a Spiritualism those are interesting questions.
It is not just a metaphysical happening. Many traditions believe that the veil thins and the spirit world is more accessible at Halloween. Check out the Halloween History on google. I found some interesting sites.
We are all body, mind, spirit. The things that tend to separate us are more connected with our beliefs and what we have been taught than our innate urge to be kind and friendly. (At least, that is what I find in my life!)
This is where I have to say...there is no spirit between people in relationships. That would be the ability to create energy and human beings do not create energy, they merely use the energy available from a higher source.
When you sit in a meeting (for whatever purpose) you find that the meeting takes on a dynamic by those present and their interests. As all were interested in spirit (their own and the those passed) it created a dynamic of communal interest.
The spirit within each of us can and does expand when we take an interest in finding the spirit in life. There is definitely 'more' in the universe than the 5 senses tell us. Mediumship is about using our spirit within to get in touch with the spirit without. (After all, God is spirit!)

I am convinced there is something to the idea of a spirit world and I have my own hypothecations on what that might be. And, I am open to other ideas.

The idea of crossing over into the realm of the dead is a little too much for me to handle at this stage in my development. Even so, I've started reading a book on the subject. I'll let you know if I come up with anything you might find interesting.
